Petrol cost calculator for your daily commute
Work out what your commute costs in petrol per day, per month and per year, and what each person pays when the ride is shared. Set up for Pakistan, with petrol at Rs 390 a litre as of 7 October 2026.
Your commute's petrol cost
Each person saves per month, sharing between 3
Rs 9,152
That is Rs 109,824 per person over a year.
| Round trip | Alone | Each, shared by 3 |
|---|---|---|
| Per day | Rs 624 | Rs 208 |
| Per month | Rs 13,728 | Rs 4,576 |
| Per year | Rs 164,736 | Rs 54,912 |
Petrol cost per km: Rs 26.0. Fuel used per day: 1.6 litres. Petrol only; this leaves out maintenance, parking and tolls.
How the monthly petrol cost is calculated
The fuel cost calculator doubles your one-way distance to get the round trip, divides it by your car's fuel average to get litres used per day, and multiplies by the petrol price. That daily figure is multiplied by your working days for the month, and by twelve for the year.
Petrol cost per km is simply the price of a litre divided by your fuel average. At Rs 390 a litre and 15 km per litre, that is about Rs 26 for every kilometre. The shared figure divides the cost equally between everyone in the car, including the driver.
How to find your car's real fuel average
The figure in the brochure, or the one a seller quotes, is usually a highway number. To measure your own, fill the tank and reset the trip meter. Drive your normal routine until you next fill up, and fill the tank again at the same pump if you can. Divide the kilometres on the trip meter by the litres it took to refill.
Do this over two or three tanks and take the average. One tank can mislead, because pumps cut off at slightly different points.
Why Karachi traffic changes the answer
A car that gives 17 or 18 km per litre on the motorway can drop to 10 or 12 on University Road or Shahrah-e-Faisal at 8:30 in the morning. Idling at signals, crawling in first and second gear, and running the AC through a Karachi summer all burn petrol without covering distance.
For a rush-hour commute, enter a lower fuel average than you would for a long drive. If you are unsure, try the calculator with two values a few km per litre apart and treat the results as a range.
Bring the number down by sharing the ride
Chalo Bhai is a carpool app for Karachi commuters, currently in development. It will match people on the same daily route so they can split this cost. There is no commission.
If you drive
Fill your empty seats with people on your route and share the fuel for a trip you are making anyway.
