The full length of University Road

The commute from Safoora to Saddar covers University Road from one end to the other. Drivers start at Safoora Chowrangi, pass Mosamiyat, the University of Karachi and NED, continue through NIPA and Hasan Square to Jail Chowrangi, and then take New M.A. Jinnah Road and M.A. Jinnah Road into Saddar. It is roughly 21 km each way, and more for anyone starting deeper inside Scheme 33.

Some drivers go through Gulistan-e-Jauhar to Shahrah-e-Faisal instead and enter Saddar from the Metropole side. As with every corridor, it helps to match with someone who takes the same line as you, so we ask drivers to describe the roads they actually use.

The longer the commute, the more there is to share

A 21 km commute is 42 km a day and over 900 km a month, just for work. At current petrol prices that is one of the larger bills in a household budget, and it is paid by people who mostly moved to Scheme 33 because housing there was more affordable.

The arithmetic of sharing improves with distance. The driver's detour to collect a rider stays the same few minutes, while the petrol being shared nearly doubles compared with a trip from Gulshan. The estimate on this page shows what that looks like split between two, three or four people.

A route with seats to fill all the way

A driver from Safoora passes through Gulistan-e-Jauhar's edge and the whole of Gulshan-e-Iqbal on the way to Saddar. That means a seat can be filled at Safoora, at the university gate, at NIPA or at Hasan Square. It also works in the other direction: thousands of students and staff travel out to the universities on this road each morning, against the main flow, and can be matched with drivers heading that way.

The societies around Safoora are spread out, and public transport inside them is thin. Many residents already rely on informal arrangements with neighbours. Chalo Bhai aims to make those arrangements easier to find, beyond the people you happen to know.

Planning around a long drive

On a long route, small delays add up. Carpools from Safoora tend to leave early, often before 7:30am, to clear the university stretch before classes begin and to reach Gulshan ahead of the office rush. Agreeing one pickup point on the main road, instead of collecting people door to door inside a society, keeps the trip predictable for everyone.

Because the drive is long, comfort matters more here than on a short hop. Ratings between carpool partners, which we are building into the app, are meant to help with that: you will be able to see how others found riding with someone before you commit to an hour a day in the same car.
