Crossing the Malir River

Every route from DHA to Korangi Industrial Area has to cross the Malir River, and that crossing shapes the whole commute. From Phases 1, 2 and 4, drivers generally take Korangi Road to the KPT Interchange at Qayyumabad and cross on Jam Sadiq Bridge. From Phases 6, 7 and 8 many head along Khayaban-e-Ittehad and the Korangi Creek side to reach Korangi Crossing.

Once across, Korangi Industrial Area Road runs past a chain of chowrangis that people on this route use as addresses: Shan, Vita, Brookes, Singer and Bilal. The trip is about 13 km from the middle of DHA to the middle of the industrial area, more if you start in Phase 8 or work towards the Landhi end.

Trucks, containers and rain

This is a freight route as much as a commuter one. Containers and trailers share the bridge and the industrial road with cars, and a single breakdown on Jam Sadiq Bridge can hold up everyone behind it. During heavy monsoon rain the low causeway crossings on the river are often closed, which pushes all traffic onto the bridges.

People who drive this route every day learn when to leave to stay ahead of the heavy traffic. That local knowledge is part of what you share in a carpool, along with the petrol.

Who makes this commute

Korangi Industrial Area is home to pharmaceutical, textile, food, leather and auto-parts factories, and each has an office full of managers, engineers, accountants, quality and supply chain staff. Many of them live across the river in DHA and Clifton. Shop-floor workers are often covered by company buses, but office staff mostly drive themselves, one to a car.

The Korangi Creek side also has a university campus and hospitals, so students, faculty and medical staff travel in the same direction at similar hours.

Why it works for carpooling

Factory offices keep strict hours, typically starting between 8 and 9am, and people rarely leave early or drift in late. Colleagues from neighbouring factories arrive within minutes of each other. A carpool that leaves DHA at 7:45 on Monday can leave at 7:45 every day.

Public transport between DHA and the industrial area is limited, and daily ride-hailing on this distance adds up fast. For riders, a regular seat with a colleague from the same industrial block is often the most practical option available. For drivers, the car is making the trip anyway, with three empty seats.

Questions about this route

My factory is near Bilal Chowrangi. Will a driver going only to Vita Chowrangi match with me?

Not for a door-to-door drop, because your stop is beyond the end of their route. You would be matched with drivers who continue at least as far as you do. You can still choose to accept a drop at Vita and cover the last stretch yourself if that suits you.

Does the estimate include the return trip to DHA?

Yes. The monthly figure on this page counts the trip to Korangi Industrial Area and back, for 22 working days. Factories that work six days a week will come out higher, and you can adjust the days in the petrol cost calculator.
