Carpool from Korangi to DHA

Every morning a large share of the people who work in DHA come from Korangi, just across the Malir River. Most of them make the trip by rickshaw, bike or ride-hailing, while cars heading the same way have empty seats.

Against the factory flow

Most talk about the Korangi and DHA commute is about managers driving from DHA out to the factories. The opposite trip is just as busy. People who live in Korangi's residential sectors travel west every morning to work in DHA's schools, clinics, offices, boutiques, salons, restaurants and homes, and then back again in the evening.

The crossing is the same in both directions. From the Korangi side, most traffic heads for Jam Sadiq Bridge, crosses the Malir River to Qayyumabad and the KPT Interchange, and continues along Korangi Road into DHA Phases 1 and 2. People working in Phases 6, 7 and 8 often go round by the Korangi Creek side instead. From the middle of Korangi to the middle of DHA is roughly 12 km.

A short trip with a high daily cost

Twelve kilometres does not sound far, but there is no simple direct option for much of this route. Many commuters string together a rickshaw or chingchi to the main road and another ride on the other side of the bridge, or pay for a ride-hailing trip each way. On a salary that is often modest, that daily fare is a large share of what the job pays.

Meanwhile, people from Korangi who own a car or a family car drive the same bridge at the same hour, frequently alone. A carpool lets them share the petrol, and gives riders a fixed, predictable cost instead of a new fare negotiation every morning.

Why women on this route asked first

Many of the jobs at the DHA end of this route, in schools, clinics, salons and shops, are held by women. For women commuting from Korangi, the practical questions are who they will be sharing the ride with and whether the arrangement will be the same every day. A regular carpool with the same people at the same time answers both better than a different rickshaw each morning.

Chal Bhai's planned women-only matching is built for exactly this: a woman who drives from Korangi to DHA can offer seats only to other women, and a woman who needs a ride can choose to be matched only with women drivers. Nobody's number is shared until both sides accept the match.

Timing on this route

Start times on this route are more varied than on an office corridor. School staff are often on the road before 7:30am, offices and clinics open around 9, and shops, salons and restaurants in DHA tend to start later in the morning. That spread is useful: a driver who leaves at 9:15 is not competing with the school rush, and riders can be matched to whichever window suits their job.

The bridge and Qayyumabad junction are the slow points in both directions, especially when container traffic is heavy or rain closes the low crossings over the river. Agreeing one pickup point on Korangi Road, rather than collecting people from inside the sectors, keeps the trip predictable.
