The usual route
Most drivers leaving Gulshan-e-Iqbal for Saddar join University Road somewhere between NIPA and Hasan Square, pass Civic Centre and Jail Chowrangi, continue on New M.A. Jinnah Road to Gurumandir and Numaish, and then follow M.A. Jinnah Road into Saddar. Door to door it is roughly 11 km, depending on which block of Gulshan you start from and whether you are heading for Empress Market, Zaibunnisa Street or the Regal Chowk side.
Some drivers prefer to cut across to Stadium Road and come in along Shahrah-e-Faisal instead, especially if their office is nearer the Cantt or Metropole end of Saddar. Both options work for carpooling. What matters for a match is which of the two you actually take, because a rider waiting at Jail Chowrangi is no use to a driver who goes via Karsaz.
Why this route suits carpooling
Almost everyone on this corridor travels in one straight line. That makes pickups simple: a rider who lives in Block 13 can walk to University Road, and the driver never has to leave the main road. The well-known stops along the way, NIPA, Hasan Square, Civic Centre and Jail Chowrangi, are places every rickshaw driver and every commuter already knows, so agreeing a meeting point takes one message.
University Road has spent years under Red Line BRT construction, and the diversions change from month to month. Drivers on this route know the current state better than any map. Sharing a car with someone who drives it every day means you inherit that knowledge, and four people in one car is three fewer cars squeezing through the narrowed lanes.
Who travels from Gulshan to Saddar every day
Saddar is still one of Karachi's main working districts. The morning traffic from Gulshan includes shopkeepers and staff heading for the electronics and mobile markets around Abdullah Haroon Road, bank and government office employees, lawyers and clerks going on towards the courts, and medical students and staff bound for the hospitals and colleges on the edge of Saddar.
Students make up a large share too. Several of the city's older colleges are in and around Saddar, and their morning classes start at about the same time as offices open. That overlap is useful: a driver leaving Gulshan at 8am will find both office workers and students looking for the same seat.
Timing and parking
The corridor is at its slowest between about 8:15 and 9:45 in the morning, and again from 5:30 in the evening. Leaving fifteen minutes earlier usually saves more than fifteen minutes. When you join the waitlist, tell us the time you really leave home rather than the time you wish you left, because that is what you will be matched on.
Parking in Saddar is tight and mostly paid. A driver who shares the petrol cost is at least recovering part of what the trip costs, and riders skip the parking problem altogether.
