The route into the old city

From North Nazimabad the usual line is Sher Shah Suri Road down past Five Star, Hyderi and KDA Chowrangi to Board Office, on through Nazimabad to Lasbela, across to Gurumandir, and then along M.A. Jinnah Road towards Tower, where I.I. Chundrigar Road runs alongside. It is about 14 km, and nearly all of it is slow, signal-to-signal driving, which is why we assume a lower fuel average here than on the other corridors.

The Green Line bus runs along much of the first half of this route and is a good option if you live and work near its stations. Carpooling fills the gaps it leaves: the walk from a block deep inside North Nazimabad, and the last stretch from Numaish to the far end of I.I. Chundrigar Road.

Why bankers carpool

I.I. Chundrigar Road is where many of Pakistan's banks, brokerages and insurance companies have their head offices, along with the central bank and the stock exchange. Thousands of people arrive on one short road within the same hour, and there is very little parking for them. Regulars know the routine of arriving early to get a space or paying for a spot some distance away.

One car carrying four colleagues needs one parking space instead of four. For this corridor that is as strong a reason to share as the petrol. Riders, for their part, get dropped at the door and never have to think about parking.

Fixed hours make reliable carpools

Bank and financial sector timings are among the most regular in the city. Most people on this route need to be at their desk by about 9am and leave at a predictable hour, apart from month-end and closing days. Regular hours are what make a carpool last, because nobody is left waiting.

When closing periods do push the evening late, it helps to have more than one option. Chalo Bhai is being built so that you can hold a morning carpool with one group and still look for a different seat home on the days your hours change.

Meeting points along Sher Shah Suri Road

North Nazimabad is laid out in lettered blocks on either side of one main road, so pickups are straightforward. Five Star Chowrangi, Hyderi, KDA Chowrangi and Board Office are the obvious meeting points, and riders from Nazimabad itself can join at Lasbela or Gurumandir further down the same line.

Because the route passes through Nazimabad and close to Garden and Soldier Bazar, a driver from North Nazimabad can fill seats along the way, not only from their own block.

Questions about this route

I take the Green Line part of the way. Is carpooling still useful?

It can be. Some commuters use a carpool for the full trip on days they carry a laptop or leave late, and the bus on other days. You choose the days you want a seat, so the two can work together.

Where do carpools from North Nazimabad usually park near I.I. Chundrigar Road?

That depends on the driver's office. Some buildings give staff a space, and other drivers use paid parking nearby. A carpool makes the cost of a paid space easier to justify, because it is split between everyone in the car if the group agrees.
